Project overview
We were approached by the owners of a local woodland regarding tree work on a large number of poplars growing close to a busy road near Grantham. The owners of the woodland had recently had a tree survey carried out, which gave recommendations for the tree work and maintenance required to support the overall health of the trees and woodland. We were given a copy of the tree report recommendations and quoted for the work as described. This involved pollarding the stretch of poplars.
Our Approach
This job took careful preparation and planning due to its roadside location. After a site visit and discussion, we decided that the most effective approach for the job would be to use a combination of manual and machine methods to carry out the work.
Having our team of arborists climb the trees was the best solution where access by the excavator was limited. They were quickly able to climb the trees using ropes and harnesses and use chainsaws to carry out the required work to pollard the trees. The Hyundai excavator with the Vosch grapple saw attachment was perfect for tackling the trees from the roadside.
It was clear that traffic management would be required to keep our arborists and machine operators safe, as well as road users. We arranged for a traffic management company to set up traffic lights at either end of the stretch of road.
Ecological considerations
As arborists, we are always aware of our environmental impact and aim to minimise this wherever we can. Our experienced team checked the poplars prior to starting the work for any signs of wildlife (for example, nesting birds and bats) and none were found at this time.
The team are well trained in biosecurity and the risks of spreading pests and diseases when working in a woodland environment. All of our usual good practice and preventative measures were carried out. These involve cleaning boots and vehicle wheels regularly and ensuring that saws and other equipment are also clean.
